Mompreneur, Part Six: Giving up control of my newborn shoot

Everyone in business has a specialty—an area of expertise that they do better in, clients they prefer to work with, personality traits that put them in a certain niche. I’m no different.

I love to work with business professionals to help them brand their business visually through lifestyle shots and stock photos. Working with babies is not my thing.

So when I had my second daughter a few months ago, I knew I was going to hire a photographer who specializes in working with newborns. Because the thing about babies is that they don’t always do what you want. And with me being Mom, I knew that I’d be frustrated and not get the shots I wanted.

In the hospital, I whipped out my camera and took a few shots of the baby—fingers and toes, close-ups, that kind of thing. But I longed for the swaddled, smooshy images of my daughter that are all the rage lately and I didn’t know how to get those. It really takes a special kind of person to mold the baby into the right positions.

Thankfully, I have a wide network of photographer friends through the Rising Tide Society and knew I wanted to work with Malia Battilana. That turned into a great decision.

Like any photo shoot, Malia sent me a prep form before our appointment so I knew what to expect. It’s a whole new experience as one of the photo subjects and knowing how to make sure my baby was ready for the day.

Even though Malia and I work with a very different clientele, I enjoyed watching her process and how she worked with me and my baby—as well as my older daughter. Malia spent some time prepping the baby and making sure I was comfortable with the shots she had in mind.

I’ll be first to admit that I’m kind of a control freak, so it was really hard to hold back and not jump in to give input. I let Malia take the reins and do her thing, and I sat back and relaxed (as much as my Type A personality allowed).

In the end, I was much happier with the experience and result than I thought I would be. Malia performed magic and was so warm and personable during our session. This carried right through to the handwritten thank you note I received in my mailbox after our session. I love with a small business’s brand is consistent from start to finish!

If you’re a business owner, have you ever given up control of something that’s in your realm of expertise? I’d love to hear about the experience!
