Family Photos: Don’t Strike a Pose!

by | Oct 25, 2017 | Blog | 0 comments

Holiday card season is right around the corner, and with that comes the obligatory family photo session. You want photos to send to relatives and friends near and far so they can see your beautiful family and how much everyone has grown.

Don’t you also want them to get to know you and your kids–so they can get a feel for who you actually are? (Because, let’s face it, it’s been 20 years since you’ve seen most of them, right!?)

Then why are you still forcing the perfectly-posed photos of Mom, Dad, Teen, Toddler and Baby? When was the last time your teenager actually listened to what you said? Or the last time you got your toddler and baby to look at the camera at the same time, let alone smile at the same time?

I say all this tongue-in-cheek, but it’s truly a reality. Posing families with children is do-able, but it also results in a stressed-looking mom, an exasperated dad, stiff adolescents and cranky youngsters. And that’s not fun for anyone involved! The photographer included.

This year, try gracing your loved ones’ mailboxes with a lifestyle family portrait. Capture the moments that really represent who your family is–warts and all. (Okay, we can edit out the warts. But you get the picture.)

Your kids are laughing, giggling little bundles of joy. They chase one another, get dirty, pull pigtails and take off their shoes. Your older children roll their eyes (in a nice way, of course), stare at their cell phones and often help out with the younger kiddos. And you and your partner have your own personalities that come out when you’re dealing with all of the above.

I encourage families to change their mindset when it comes to their family photos to help reduce the stress and watch personalities blossom. Sure, we can try for the posed pic, but it’s not worth the stress when Baby wets her diaper or Toddler just wants to play. Or your teenager is having a teenager moment.

Showing off your family in its true form will make you more genuine–something we all long for in today’s social media-perfect world.

And if you want true humanized photos, just bring the family pets with you to the shoot. Then we’ll have a real circus!
