Dive into my Business Mindset for Success!

“How did you get where you are in your business?”
People sometimes ask me these questions, and the answer really comes down to mindset and the things I choose to do everyday.
So I want to touch on how I’ve personally changed my own business mindset for success and some of the habits I’ve developed for getting stuff done.
I’m a planner. In fact, I plan the heck out of things. With only 3 full days a week without kiddos, I have to. So I plan shoots, props, content, and blogs ahead of time. I organize everything down to our family appointments. And while this can make any random things that may pop up a bit more difficult, the planning keeps me on point with what I’m working on each day so that I reach my overall goals and keep the family flexibility I need in my life.
And more than just planning, I have to prioritize my day. While this may sound horrible at first, a good way to do this is to ask myself what makes me money. The truth is that at the end of the day, I could have 1,000 things on my to-do list, but looking at what’s making me money and serving my clients allows me to sort through it all. Tasks like making shot lists, editing photos, going out on shoots — these will always take precedence. Other tasks I can outsource or push off to later in the evening when I may have a few extra hours. But putting the projects that are priorities at the top of the list and everything else down below keeps me moving forward.
Set a Date
Setting a date and then working backwards from there is another strategy I use. It’s a way to put on some positive pressure and force myself into accountability. In times past, I’d want to do a project but was wishy washy about it, and then one of my accountability buddies told me to just stop, pick a date, and then do it. She was right! I found that when a launch day was on my calendar and people knew about it, I got the work done. And I did this by prioritizing whatever the scheduled project was into my daily tasks in small pieces. In that way, I was consistently getting closer and closer to my goal, whether that was creating my course, putting together my holiday bundle, working on a new collaboration, etc. This technique really changed my mindset around completing projects and helps me get things done faster, too.
It’s hard to get myself motivated when I won’t see the results for a while, so I focus on the work I want to do in the next 90 days. When I work my butt off, I want to see those amazing things start happening soon! So I create my 90-day plan, and then I ALWAYS have something to do each day that moves me toward where I want to be at the end of that time.
Surrounding myself with buddies that help me break through mental blocks is essential for me. When I feel unmotivated, it’s often because I’ve put up a mental block around a project and need to find a way to break through it. That’s when I go talk to my business buddies. They keep it real, nudge me toward getting myself into gear, give honest feedback, and aren’t afraid to hurt my feelings a little bit now so that I can fix what needs to be fixed and move forward. Business owners often band together for this very reason — we all need assistance refocusing, remembering why we’re doing something, and realigning with the expectations on us from time to time. So my business buddies help me make sure that I don’t hold myself back from being successful.
